NORC Mapping
Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs) are unplanned communities with high proportions of older adult residents.
Knowing where these communities are and how they change over time can be helpful as we think about how to distribute targeted services (e.g., social programs and healthcare) to ensure they are reaching the communities which most need them.
Our team used dissemination areas (DAs), a Census Canada geographical unit from the 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 censuses to identify areas in Ontario, Canada with equal to, or greater than, 40% of persons aged 55 years of age or older. They then mapped the DAs in a publicly available and interactive format.
Below you can see the each map and by scrolling between them, the change over time. If you click on an individual map it will take you to a new window that allows you to move around and zoom in on specific areas that may be of particular interest to you.
